How and when Filipinos were called Filipinos

Under the Spanish regime, the natives were called Indios and the term Filipinos were only applied to Spaniards born in the Philippines. Peninsulares is the term used for Spaniards born in Spain, while Insulares has usage similar to the term Filipinos. Those who have mixed blood, either Spanish-Filipino or Chinese-Filipino were called Mestizos. It was only in 1898 that Indios or natives began to be called Filipinos.

I can’t help but think that Filipinos who blame former Philippine President and Congresswoman, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) for everything bad that has happened in the country have a squatter mentality. By my own definition, people who have a squatter mentality have this strong sense of entitlement. They believe that the government owes them benefits or privileges. This is why you will often hear people say, “It is GMA’s fault why there are more poor people in the Philippines”. Never mind that GMA had no control over people’s decision to have more babies they can’t afford to feed. Of course, GMA wasn’t perfect. But like I said in my previous article, the fact that the Aquino government can’t even charge her for her “crimes” using a case that could stick means that they’ve got nothing much on her.

Lord, have mercy on us...Queen of the Most Holy Rosary , pray for us...that we maybe made worthy of the promises of Christ.
In the middle of my sweet dream, my dad wakes me up and told me to pray...

I wake up, pray and sleep... I wake up, pray and sleep... I wake up, pray without knowing the reason why so I sleep again... I was waken up when I hear that my brother Jesum is already shouting for help. I hurriedly went to my mom's room and she was...unconsciuos!!! I was so selfish!!! We rushed her to St. James Hospital at 3:00AM and we learned that she has a ruptured brain hemorrhage Stage 4! We were very hopeless on hearing that the doctor can do nothing... We decided to bring her to St. Luke's but we don't have money so we rushed her to Pines City Doctors' Hospital... It was May 26, 2012... I held to her my personal rosary before leaving the surgical ICU.

Hail Marry full of grace the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus
She undergone a surgical operation because of the ruptured vein in her brain... I pray night and ask for a miracle... It's now one month of pain and agony of her life! If only I was a better fighter after all... If only I was not selfish... If only I can turn back time... (To be continued)

Journalism Competition: The iamPINOY Project

1. General Guidelines
 1.1 The journalism competition is open to all mandated and accredited student organizations and student publications in the university.
 1.2 The journalism competition shall have the following category.
   A. Features
     a. Lasang Pinoy
     b. Proudly Pinoy
     c. Biyahe na, Pinoy!
      d. Gawang Pinoy
      e. Fiestang Pinoy
    B. Editorial
     a. Politics
    b. Society
    c. Environment
   C. Literary
    a. Pinoy History
    b. Pinoy Culture
    c. Pinoy Values
    d. Pinoy Moves, Music, Movies

2. Requirements
  2.1 All entries should be written in English or Filipino.
  2.2 The theme will be given in the contest proper.
  2.3 All submissions must be original.
  2.4 An organization shall have a maximum of three (3) contestants per category. 

3. Schedule
  3.1  Journalism Competition: Second day of the Business Week Celebration
  3.2 Registration: 7:30AM at the day of the competition
  3.3 Contest Proper: 8AM-12NN

GENERAL MECHANICS
A. The contestants must have to comply the above requirements.
B. Entries will be published to the iamPINOY blogsite (pinoydefinitely.blogspot.com).
C. All entries will be submitted to the Department of Tourism.
